The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, not just the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
