Patients Stopping Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing such medications need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle management.
